Filter Title of Record (Reprise/Warner)
Remember all those household-cleaning bands of the mid-'90s: Sponge, Wax, Linoleum, Filter? Yeah, it's been four long alt-crashing years since Filter--essentially ex-NIN guitarist Richard Patrick--broke with the sports- and ad-friendly "Hey Man, Nice Shot," a compelling if latter-day pseudo-industrial anthem. And there are lots more pseudo-industrialisms on album #2 (but no equal song), where Patrick reveals himself to be just another rock pig, just another band dictator (like the Trent Reznor he rebelled against) and just another slob who softens things a bit in search of a follow-up hit. 6/10 (Chris Yurkiw)
Various Josh's Blair Witch Mix (Chapter III/EMI)
Even though the doc, uh--movie, uh--story had no music in it whatsoever, shrewd marketing types have slapped together, rather nicely, the idea of making this soundtrack a mixtape, purportedly belonging to one of the movie's characters. Hell, it even has some exclusive footage in interactive mode. With tracks by the Creatures, Bauhaus and Meat Beat Manifesto, the songs' collective vibe is every bit as creepy as a pile of sticks and stones. 7/10 (Lateef Martin)
Tricky With DJ Muggs and Grease Juxtapose (Island/Universal)
As the guy who wrote Tricky's latest bio sheet put it, the Trickster walks to the beat of a different drum machine. Never has that been more true than with this release. Juxtapose has Tricky actually letting other people work the controls, while he adds his trademark rasp and smooth talking on top. Tricky and DJ Muggs, okay, but Tricky and Grease?! If your tastes for Massive Attack and DMX were ever to cross, this might be the result, but I guess that's what juxtaposition is all about. 7.5/10 (Scott C)
DJ John Kelley High Desert Sound System (Moonshine)
The pseudo-tribal Moontribe raves that take place in the Mojave Desert near L.A. have spawned yet another mix CD from So-Cal DJ John Kelley. In the spirit of the Funkydesertbreaks compilations comes the next in the series, High Desert Sound System, a mash-up of progressive tech-trance tunes like Jark Prongo's "Movin' Thru Your System," mystery tracks "Killa Bite" 1 and 2 and DJ Dan's "That Zipper Track." Add some sand and a Joshua tree and you too can party in the desert. 7.5/10 (Krista)
DJ Aaron Carter Lit Up (Moonshine)
L.A.'s Aaron Carter is to tech-trance what Derrick Carter and Mark Farina are to funky house. Carter began his rise to the high-energy hot spot as one half of the electronic group Cirrus. Now that Cirrus have hit it big with tunes reaching the Top 20 on the Billboard charts, he's decided to give the DJ thing a go again. Cashing in on the comeback tip, the Lit Up mix is a full-on trance assault of drum build-ups and 303 basslines, featuring artists like X-Cabs, Chris Liberator and, of course, Cirrus. 7.5/10 (Krista)
