Tam-Tam 2000
Yet another sign that Tam-Tam has become too big for its britches: a Montreal newcomer is organizing what he hopes will be the biggest Tam-Tam ever. Big enough, in fact, to break the Guinness Book of World Records standing record for most drummers playing simultaneously at a single gathering. David Slemin, who moved to Montreal from Victoria, BC in January, wants to gather 2,000 drummers on the University of Montreal campus on Saturday, August 28. (Due to municipal bylaws, the event cannot be held at the Tam-Tam space.) "The Sunday Tam-Tam isn't even an organized event, and it's huge," says Slemin. "Imagine how big it can be if someone actually organizes it." Slemin needs at least 1,700 drummers to break the Guinness record. To create some draw for his event, he's bringing in Virgil Donati from Australia--"the fourth-best drummer in the world," Slemin says--to perform. For that, the event will cost participants $12 each to get in. For information and tickets, call 934-9140. --Philip Preville |
