Those quirky distributors at Manga Video have released the anthology General Chaos: Uncensored Animation. It's a collection of truly screwy, twisted cartoons from all over the place. (Notably, the classier entries were bankrolled by Britain's sublime Channel 4.) As is typical with a series of shorts, the quality is wildly uneven. Some of the filmmakers here seem to think that killing and eating babies, flatulence or necrophilia are innately funny subjects. Their work is evidence to the contrary.

On the flip side, there are some truly funny numbers here. The Happy Moose has a foul-mouthed moose with a thick Bronx accent telling a ludicrous bed-time story to three children. The recounting of the story, which involves flying saucers, a train wreck, mass carnage and a gang of "magical, mental weasels with guns" is hilarious. Another winner is The Donor Party, which combines the computer-generated animated effects that create that 3D effect with Terry Gilliamesque cut-out 2D figures. It's a beautiful film and includes a special thanks to Apple Computers during its final credits.

On the miss list comes the feature kiddie fare Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, a way-too-lengthy version of the Saturday morning show. It all feels like a giant infomercial, one even more moronic and crass than those that target adults.
