Bullfighting and the law
Animal rights activists heightened their opposition to the upcoming bullfight at the Big O with a demo outside Louise Harel's office Monday. They formally presented the Minister for Municipal Affairs and Greater Montreal with a legal opinion by lawyer Lesli Bisgould stating that the proposed bullfight will be in direct violation of at least two subsections of the Canadian Criminal Code--those dealing with fighting and baiting animals, and those causing pain or suffering to animals. Protesters also called for the resignation of Pierre Barnoti, director of Montreal's SPCA. Barnoti has announced he is working with the Corrida organizers to ensure the bulls are well treated and have a home on an Eastern Townships farm on which to spend the rest of their post-fight lives. Rebecca Aldworth of Global Action Network says the bill for a lifetime of care for eight bulls works out to about $420,000. Says Aldworth, "We can safely assume the bulls are going to be slaughtered immediately after the fight." --Jacquie Charlton |
