That'll learn ya

by KRISTA

School's in a month early--night school, that is. If you don't already know all there is to know about dance music, now's your chance to learn something new. No registration is necessary, just show up on the night and pay the enrolment fee (a measly $58).

The course in question is called Dance Music 101, brought to you by Hundred Acre Wood Productions, and is being offered from Wednesday, August 11 through 14, and then August 18 and 20, at Cabaret and Jai Bar. August 12, 13, 14 and 20 will take place at Cabaret and August 11 and 18 will take place at Jai Bar, in conjunction with the regular Wednesday night, Alchemy.

The course syllabus is a history of dance music from 1960 to the present. Subject material will include every style of "dance" music from early Philly soul, jazz and funk to rave and beyond. Under the stern supervision of department dean/event organizer Alex Robbins, your aural history professors will include Jordan Dare, Ram, Miss V, Gordon Field, Patrick Dream, Nav, Double A & Twist, myself and many others.

Of course, you realize I'm not talking about the kind of schooling that will get you a job in the real world (Solid Gold was cancelled a long time ago), but then again, no tests, no homework and no course prerequisites. Watch this space for more info.

In other news, infamous Inbeat Records boss-cum-London music scene philanthropist Christian Pronovost gets back in town next Wednesday, August 11. He will be taking over the decks at China Club's Aruanda in honour of resident Alain Vinet's birthday. Open Bar from 11pm 'til midnight, free sushi while it lasts, and lots of champagne.

Saturday, August 14, the Arrival 3 touches down in a field somewhere near Mirabel. The official pre-party takes place at Stereo on Friday, August 13, with Stacey Pullen and XL. The mega-outdoor festival starts at 10pm on Saturday and goes until 12pm (or maybe even longer) the next day with some 37 plus DJs playing, including Dave Clarke, Pullen, Johnny Fiasco, Ben Long, Felix Da Housecat and Baby Hec Romero. Tix are $30 in advance, available pretty much anywhere. Warning: you may want to invest in a crate of bug repellent. Call 851-0501 for info.

Finally, local drum & bass dons Double A & Twist have decided to try their hand at something a little different, music-wise. They've started a Sunday night thing at Jai Bar called Shift where they can be heard playing everything from Paul Weller to Paul's Boutique, including the occasional house tune or two. And they aren't afraid to work the CDs, either. They may not be mixing like demons, but the tunes are all good.
