Session's over by KRISTA I've always found it ironic that drum & bass, which has been alive as a small yet visible scene in Montreal for over five years, hasn't managed to become more popular. Drum & bass didn't catch on in places like New York and San Francisco until a few years after it had already hit Canada. Yet those cities have huge and prosperous d&b scenes. Where's the love? Major drum & bass artists are touring all over North America and still most of them pass us by. Apparently no local promoter seems to think that they can generate enough hype to cash in on a night devoted to drum & bass, and so Montreal's longest running drum & bass night, the Session, has hit yet another pitfall. Les Productions 514, who had taken on the night back in late March and moved it into Sona bar, have decided to shut down the Wednesday night event because they felt that they just weren't attracting enough business. This is, in my books, a real shame. However, keep the faith. Session regulars Jordan Dare, Double A & Twist promise it won't be long before they find a new home for the night. Watch this space for updates.
With that off my chest we can proceed with what's up in the next few weeks. In case you hadn't noticed, the Jazz Fest is in full swing and has taken over several city blocks. You should note that a few of the acts booked for the DJ 1999 series at Le Savoy have cancelled. Both Kid Loco and 4-Hero will not be coming, but San Francisco's Spacetime Continuum (aka Jonah Sharp) will be appearing in 4-Hero's place, Thursday, July 8. This Friday, July 9 at Sona, New York's king of the mindless trancey breakbeats, DJ Liquid Todd takes over the main room while the Executioners' DJs Total Eclipse and Mista Sinista will scratch up the lounge... literally. Saturday, July 10, Pagan Records artist and tech-house pioneer Terry Francis goes deep in Sona's main room with Laflèche and Luc Raymond. I guess Tokyo owners Lamine and Paolo were feeling bad about how lonely Miguel Graça has been at his Monday night gig. They have enlisted the aid of some local hipsters and given Monday night a name, and hopefully some faces. Index & Co. will be hosting Pret à Porter every Monday at Tokyo with DJs Graça and Pat Boogie. Next Tuesday, July 13, Fred Everything will make a guest appearance at Luba's Exotic Soul Garden with resident DJ Nav. Thursday, July 15, if you're really looking for a reason to party beyond the fact that it's summer, local scenesters/promoters Claudy, Etienne and Inobe will be celebrating their birthdays, and New Jersey DJ Tee Alford (Artform Records, Joint Ventures) will be Jojo Flores' guest at Jai Bar's Therapy. Jai has never seen a party like the one those boys are gonna have. Sam, Voytek, brace yourselves. |
