Death Inc. comes to the Main Plateau dwellers and other St-Laurent party rats may have noticed the renovations currently under way at the old Bank of Montreal building on the Main north of Rachel, where numerous banks (including the Caisse Populaire across the street) have shut down. Is the bank coming back to life? Nope: it's so dead, it's being converted into a funeral complex. The site is being developed not by local mega-funeral going concern Urgel Bourgie, but by the Alfred Dallaire group, which has a history of serving the area's Portuguese community. And after opening their newly renovated mega-complex in Ville St-Laurent two weeks ago, Urgel Bourgie probably doesn't need yet another outlet. Right now, Urgel Bourgie has a total of 57 funeral homes on the Island of Montreal (and that's not counting other chains or independents in the industry). That means there are almost as many Urgel Bourgie outlets as McDonald's outlets--McDonald's currently counts 58 restaurants on the Island of Montreal. Coincidence? --Philip Preville |
