Caetano Veloso Livro (Nonesuch/Warner) I'm not sure the anglo pop world has an elder statesman as poised and self-challenging as Brazilian national hero Caetano Veloso. Then again, it's probably impossible to extract the importance of this '60s Tropicália star from the context of his beloved Brazil, but this international release tries. Fittingly, it's all over the map, and Veloso pulls it off: an old samba becomes a new samba-reggae, a João Gilberto bossa nova sounds utterly contemporary, and an acoustic stab at drum & bass (!) works as wacked Latin jazz. 8/10 (Chris Yurkiw) At the Jazz Fest, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier (TBA), PdA, Thurs., July 8, 8:30pm, $35.50-$55.50
Jesper Dahlback Stockholm Mix Sessions (Turbo Recordings) For their fourth release, Montreal's Turbo Recordings call on the skills of Svek label recording artist Jesper Dahlback. From Isolee's "Beau Mot Plage" to Dahlback's own unreleased re-workings, The Stockholm Mix Sessions is a blissful mix of sexy, sultry house tunes warm enough to melt arctic ice caps, and cool enough to stave off the blistering summer heat. The definitive CD for those late night get-togethers. 9/10 (Krista)
Gary Burton A Genuine Tong Funeral (RCA/BMG) A superb, long-awaited reissue combining five cuts from "Lofty Fake Anagram"--by the quartet of vibist Burton, Larry Coryell, Steve Swallow (on acoustic bass) and Bob Moses--with the entire "Genuine Tong Funeral," an extended early work of Carla Bley's played by a tentet, the above group plus people like Steve Lacy, Gato Barbieri, Jimmy Knepper and Bley herself. Reputed to be the favourite recording of Gary's parents. 10/10 (Len Dobbin)
