Raël:Dolly the sheep's biggest fan "The next Raël," exclaimed local UFO cult guru Raël last Friday, "won't be like Pope John Paul the Second, a different person with the same name. Raël the Second will be the real thing." What Raël means, of course, is that he will have himself cloned. Raël was in Montreal to speak at the Raëlian-sponsored conference entitled "Yes to Human Cloning," held before a capacity crowd of admirers at the Salle du Gesù. The event, though promoted as a "debate," was in fact a love-in for cloning fans, featuring such speakers as Randolph Wicker, president of the Clone Rights United Front of America, and Brigitte Boisselier, scientific director of CLONAID, a company promoting cloning as an alternative to human reproduction. As for the Raëlian church's official position on cloning: Raëlians believe that life on earth was created scientifically in laboratories by aliens, and that Jesus' resurrection was, in fact, an extraterrestrial slight-of-hand performed through a clone. --Philip Preville |
