Angel >> Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, for sticking it to Conrad Black Black, owner of the Montreal Gazette, the National Post and many other dailies across Canada--not to mention the London Daily Telegraph--wants a seat in Britain's House of Lords. The Queen agrees, and the U.K. even sped up the approval of his dual-citizenship application for that purpose. But Canadians are not allowed to accept British titles, so Chrétien stepped in and said no. It must be the first time in decades Black hasn't had his way. He's been repeatedly quoted in his newspapers saying the government's conduct is "embarrassing." Got news for ya, Conrad: the only person embarrassed by all this is you.
Insect >> Mayor Pierre Bourque, who refused to think of the children This year, McGill is giving an honorary degree to Norio Ohga, Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation--a man who, as the McGill press release points out, controls companies "which exceed $51 million in consolidated sales worldwide." You don't suppose McGill is giving him the degree in the hopes of laying their grubby hands on some of that booty, do you? After all, he did hand out millions to the likes of Michael Jackson, Céline Dion and Mariah Carey.
