Vice bites the Big Apple

by SCOTT C

Everybody's talking about Jamiroquai again, like they do every time the funky little U.K. outfit puts an album out. They've carved a very nice little slot for themselves with very little comparative competition in the dance-friendly, neo-disco but not-too-commercial kind of vein. They've also managed to survive the dreaded acid-jazz categorization long enough to attract millions of fans around the globe. Armed with a million and one hats and a logo that is pretty much immediately recognizable, vocalist/jumping bean Jay K and his band have been on a sort of eco-trip for years. Environmental overtones may not be quite as pronounced as they were in the beginning, but then again it was cool to be down with the earth in '91.

With the clock ticking down to their July 16 show at Metropolis, I've decided to try to learn as much as I can about the inner workings of the band until zero hour. I thought there must be some very special people behind the making of their new record when I heard it, and I was right. In his thank-yous, Jay K names a lot of people. Mixed in with his family, friends, record company people, studio staff and bandmates, he also thanks Adidas, Versace, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger and Ferrari. I'm sure he couldn't have done it without them.

Those of you who've been making the trip to St-Laurent and Fairmount to check out the hot 12" madness at Science should take note. Your one-stop hip hop shop has moved and merged. First the merge: Science now occupies the same space as DNA Records, along with their previous squatter Moog Audio. All of this is located at 28 Pine ave. E., right across from Mohammed's dep. Indie shit, majors, mixtapes, CDs, plus Kano(!) and more production equipment than you can shake a stick at.

Oh man. Those guys from Rotation are in deep now. Deep Productions, that is. That's the name of the promotional team responsible for Rotations: electronic music series happening from June 'til September at good 'ol Foufounes Électriques. Although two of the scheduled dates have already passed, look out for I-Cue from N.Y. on June 22, bringing the d&b. He'll be playing with Spinal and MC Sylla, $7 advance and $9 at the door. Also, watch for Hip Replacement and Soundshaper kicking some downtempo on the 29th of this month as well.

Well, it's official. Vice magazine is hitting the road for a New York office. Leaving behind two drones to man the helm here in Montreal, the editorial schlock genius of Suroosh, Gavin, Shane and Heather take the next logical step towards world domination with a spot in the Big Apple. Sorry to see you go, guys, but I wish you nothing but the best. Remember, porno is the key... Good luck!
