angel Angel >> The public-transit and clean-air activist group Transport 2000 For the fourth year in a row, Transport 2000 is organizing Clean Air Day. And they're going to shut down the stretch of Ste-Catherine between Jeanne-Mance and St-Urbain all day next Wednesday June 2, causing all sorts of downtown traffic snarls in the process. It's a drag for motorists--but, then, that's the whole point, isn't it? Pitch in for the environment: take the bus that day.

insect Insect >> Rural Quebec hicks who want to run some helpless HIV-positive monkeys out of town In 1997, when a New York University health research lab was shut down, Quebecer Gloria Grow rescued 15 chimpanzees slated for termination, some of them HIV-positive. Now the nearby town of Carignan, population 5,800, wants to dispose of the cursed monkeys. As a potential court battle heats up, the chimps frolic in their retirement-home playground, which is surrounded by two rings of fence, the outer one electric. Give the chimps a break: they were deliberately infected for the cause of human health, so the least we can do is let them live out their lives in peace.
