Shake your terrasse
by KRISTA Terrasse season is upon us. Prince-Arthur street smells of micro-brew beer and all-you-can-eat Greek food, and St-Laurent is a veritable strip for the pastime known as see-and-be-seen. Speaking of which, there's a new terrasse on the strip. The Holder brothers (remember Royal and Business?) have made some sweet lemonade out of the lemon that went up in flames over the winter. They've transformed the former restaurant Matteo into Sugar, and made the second floor into the sexiest terrasse I've ever laid eyes on (too bad about those big papier-mâché statue things holding up the entrance, though). Musically they have a no-house policy happening. Strictly rare grooves, hip hop and all that jazz with DJs Scott C, Simahlak, Leo and Antonin, seven days a week, baby.
Patrick Dream now has a protégé playing with him Fridays at Jai Bar. DJ Bruno is now featured weekly at the very underground House Is a Feeling night. Les Productions 514 are now accepting résumés for the Sona position formerly held by DJ XL! No, just joking. But they are testing out some new blood. Tomorrow night (Friday, May 14) Peter Crno plays Sona's big room with Tiga and Yaz. Starting this Saturday night, Jordan Dare will be playing at Blizzarts' Massive Saturdays alongside DJ Destro until DJ Maüs returns from her European tour. And hey, it's free. Tuesday, May 18, Trevor Walker rolls into town to play at Jai Bar with DJ Uzi, and he'll also be filling in for the jetsetting Fred Everything at Jingxi's Vira La Derencha on Thursday, May 20.
The Wild & Wet Weekend main event will take place a day early this year, on Saturday, May 22 at CEPSUM, so as to allow a greater number of Americans to attend. DJs on the night will be DJ/Producer Razor of Razor & Guido and James Andersen from NYC's Roxy and Miami's Liquid, along with local circuit boy Stephane Grondin. However, The BBCM have added a new event to their yearly shindig with Hot & Dry (Oasis of Love) to be held at Metropolis on Sunday, May 23, starring the world-renowned Peter Rauhoffer. DJ Gilles Jr. will get the party started right. For Wild & Wet Weekend info and tix, call 875-7026 ext. 0. Also on Sunday, May 23, it's the Ultimate Party showdown. I hope you've still got that handy teleportation gizmo lying around 'cause you're going to want to be two places at once. Swirl 5 touches down tornado-style with DJs and artists like Cassius, Sasha, Carl Craig, Doc Martin, DJ Sneak, Scan X, Scott Henry, Kid Koala, Cash Money and many, many more. At the Olympic Stadium, tix $25 in advance, info 723-CREW. And in the other corner... Stereo will open up the same night to play host to house music's Latin lover, the superb Lil' Louie Vega of Masters at Work fame. $20 at the door. |
