Underground cold fever by KRISTA How much does it suck to be me right now? It's like clockwork. Every year, just as the snow turns to dirty water and dribbles down the gutters, just as we begin to notice how wide the streets really are, and just as we start to feel the warm sun we've been deprived of for the past five months, I get a cold. As most people are letting that sexy spring fever sensation warm over their bodies, I get a whole different kind of fever; one that requires bad tasting medicine and bed rest. But enough about me me me. Back to the very important business of clubbing and feigning a deep understanding of what is "underground." My Webster Handy College Dictionary defines underground as "...pertinent to anything that is experimental, radical, unconventional, etc." Which leaves me racking my brain trying to think of something in our little scene that's experimental or radical--aside from the drugs, that is. >>> I suppose drum & bass is still relatively radical and experimental. And now there are a few alternatives to the Session to take in. Angel's Easy Tuesdays has some competition up the street with Life at Tokyo, featuring DJ Future Lad and guests. DJ Maüs's Massive Saturdays at Blizzarts are usually pretty raging, and her guest this Saturday, April 17, is Sase One, who will also be playing that night at Drum & Bass Explosion!, with Spinal and Destro, at 4152 St-Laurent, $5 at the door. U.K. label Soma's Glaswegian-Swedish tech-funk machine Funk D'Void plays live at Sona this Friday, April 16, for Gypsy Moon. Imagine growing up in Scotland with a name like Lars and you're inside the mind of the man behind such brilliant tracks as "Jack Me Off" and "Bad Coffee," and the group Chaser. The evening will be hosted by Michino and Ascend, the same posse who put together the Free Bamboo Butterfly events (think nude body-painting) and also features Italian DJ Marco Cucchia. I tried to find Gypsy Moon in the dictionary, but Webster has no listing. The definition provided by the promoters is "the world inside of each of us, waiting to be born." All for only $20 at the door.
This Saturday, April 17 at Club Unity, Billion Dollar Boys present Sweet Latino Lover, featuring the return of the loveably ostentatious Robbie Maybe the new underground movement lies in this whole live house music band thing. Sunday, April 18, local phonke-boys les Jardiniers take to the stage at Jingxi, and Wednesday, April 21, Sequoia play at Tokyo. >>> In the weeks leading us into the anxiously awaited month of May, we will see some pretty cool--if not radical--artists making a stop in Montreal. Friday, April 23, Stereo has San Franciscan legend Jeno (finally!), and Sona has the controversial yet undeniably cool Josh Wink. Here here. Saturday, April 24, Stereo has the other Grammy award-winner, Frankie Knuckles, aka the Godfather of House, stepping in for David Morales. Stay underground.
