Fill in the Blancs

by KRISTA

The newest trend in clubbing these days is "less is more." It's no longer about strippers, supermodels or gimmicks, it's all about the tunes (Montreal take note...). This month's issue of the Face magazine lists the three hottest "no frills, no surprises" clubs of the moment as:

3. Body&Soul, NYC. The vibe: envision the movie Fame in a warehouse, with the legendary Joe Claussel and François K on the decks.

2. Skansen, Oslo, Norway. The vibe: lots of beautiful people, lots of liquor and that sexy Scandinavian house sound.

1. Basement Jaxx, South London. The vibe: party! Basement Jaxx label producers and DJs Felix and Simon serve up the sickest tracks around. No dress code, no guest DJs.

All it takes is a little road trip or a quick weekend tour of Europe to experience what could be the night of your life. Now, when is someone going to get on the case and bring the Basement Jaxx boys to Montreal? And if I could play too... well, a girl can dream, can't she?

As if last weekend wasn't busy enough (David Morales, John Howard, Jim Masters), this is pretty much the holiday weekend of the year--save Labour Day--starting tonight, April 1. No fooling. High Bar has NYC promoter-turned-DJ and Twilo resident David Waxman. I've never heard him, but he opens for Junior Vasquez, if that's any indication of what to expect musically.

Friday, April 2, kick-ass b-girl posse Ellementale 5 put on a benefit at Cabaret called Legendary One, featuring an all-star-all-girl roster. The night's festivities include dance performances, video screenings, and beats ranging from old school breaks to jungle and hip hop. DJs on the night are Starte, Killa Jewel & Katalyst, Miss V., Spiral Girl, Hectic, Maüs and moi. Doors at 7:30 p.m., tix $9 in advance and $11 at the door. Support!

Also on Friday night, Sona has San Francisco's head-in-the-clouds, feet-on-the-dancefloor Dubtribe Sound System. Get ready to "take your planet back." Saturday night sees the freaks come out as Cevin Fisher returns to pound out the hard house alongside Luc Raymond and Laflèche. Fisher was inspired to create the tune "The Freaks Come Out" when he played at Sona during last year's ice storm. Each night is $25 at the door.

What's Easter without the Bal en Blanc? Now strictly a Playground productions event, the main Ball takes place Sunday, April 4 at CEPSUM as planned, with Peter Rauhoffer, Danny Tenaglia and David Knapp. Locals are Alain Vinet, Nic B and Jester, with a performance by Couch Potatoes.

The marathon starts Thurs. at Unity, followed by White Sand at Jingxi with Fred Everything on Fri. Saturday Robert de la Gauthier plays the White Light party at Red Light in Laval. Monday morning's Daylight is at Limelight with Scott Free, Eddy Jasmin and more. The race continues that night with Off White at Jingxi, featuring Miami's John Lepage, Nicola T, Miguel Graça, etc, coming to an end with les Mardis Interdits. Info: 990-0672.

Prizes go to whoever manages to stay the whitest. See you at the finish line.
