Pretty fly..

(for a white guy)

>> Extreme rock dude Adam Paskowitz of the Flys takes a novel approach

by ADAM GOLLNER

Singer Adam Paskowitz is a surfer dude from California. He and his band, the Flys, believe that extreme things are gnarly. Whether it's "hardcore" mountain biking, skyboarding or radical guitar licks, these rap/metal fusioneers flock toward extreme adventure like flies to shit. Now, Paskowitz is ready to take the ultimate challenge. Are you?

Mirror: Hello, Adam? This is Adam from the Montreal Mirror.

Adam Paskowitz: Adam! Fuckin' rad name, dude! You know where I am? I'm in Shit Shack, Saskatoon. I don't even know where I am, I just woke up and I'm in this hotel. But it's awesome. All the gigs we've played so far have been like, crazy, psychotic, Canadian, you know, mosh pits.

M: Would you say that they're extreme?

AP: I would say they're pretty damned wild, yeah. And we've played some gnarly gigs--I mean, we had a gig in Salt Lake City with Rancid, and lemme tell you, it was goin' off, so I know what goin' off is. And the last few shows have been really goin' off.

M: What is the most extreme thing that you have ever done?

AP: I would've said being in Hawaii riding waves. We've gone out on some pretty wild days where we were way, way out of our league, and we should not have been out there. There were some days when the fog rolled in and it was really life and death. But honestly, the most extreme thing I've ever done is trying to write a book with no education whatsoever... I never went to school. And I've never read a book in my life.

M: What? You've never read a book and now you're going to write a book?

AP: I don't know. I sent my parts in that I have, and it's about a teenaged girl. The other day, I heard on MTV that I'm writing a book. There's a pressure in that. You know, I taught myself how to read kinda recently, so writing is the next step. Today I'm in my hotel room just banging away.

M: Is it a lot of work?

AP: Oh my God. It's super stressful. There's a level of failure that you can achieve on this level that's just, like, gnarly.

M: Sounds pretty gnarly.

AP: It's scary, dude. Scary.

M: You call yourselves the "homeless James Bonds." Why?

AP: When we started touring, we always had to make things work, like MacGyver. Or James Bond. The only problem with us is that we never had any money. So we try to be like James Bond, but nothing works, you know?

M: I guess... and your mission is "heavy music that is danceable," right?

AP: We're rockers, but we keep the beat and the groove going. We're like a combination of heavy metal and rap, which is a strange combination. It's a trick deal where we like to keep it groovin', like a groovin' metal.

M: Well, good luck with the novel... dude.
