Namby Pambies storm McGill

Calling themselves the Namby Pamby Positive Action Committee of McGill University, a group of 15 students occupied the offices of the McGill Students' Society (SSMU) last Thursday night and Friday morning. The group was protesting SSMU's proposed McGill Student Fund, which would cost students an additional $38 per semester.

SSMU President Duncan Reid told the Mirror that the fund would be used to renovate the Shatner building, provide bursaries to students in need and improve library holdings. "I don't understand their position," Reid told the Mirror. "The fund is not mandatory--it's optional. Students can opt out and get a refund if they want."

Namby Pamby occupier Reid Allaway disagrees: "My definition of optional is this: set up a box marked 'donations' at the entrance to the Shatner building. The government should be paying for these things, not us."

Students are voting on the proposal this week.
