The show most definitely must go on... by SCOTT C There I was, falling asleep on the couch, having been forced out of my bed by some loud renovations in the apartment next door, when Big Daddy Kane's "Wrath of Kane" came booming out of the speakers in the corner. Recorded live at the Apollo back in 1989, the song fully captures the insane energy of both Kane and the audience that was characteristic of hip hop shows at the time. This was back when your live show basically made or broke you and people had to compete. All kinds of people are talking about this Jay-Z/DMX/Method Man/Redman tour due at the Molson Centre on March 11 because it's been a while since even a small show rolled through our town, let alone a heavyweight lineup like this. I for one plan to enjoy myself, even though I think Redman is the show. This tour has been compared to the legendary Hit Squad tour from 88-89, which featured a then still-together EPMD, Das EFX, a younger Redman and K-Solo, to name a few. If the crowd gets half as hype as they did at that show, then we've got ourselves a party. Now let's concentrate on getting our performers across the border. This Saturday, CKUT 90.3 will be dedicating an entire day of programming to exploring black culture. "Black Talk"programming will include spoken word, cultural forums and discussions, educational programming and of course all kinds of music, so tune in all day and get schooled. March 4th at Cafe Campus brings Apocalypse 1999 into the spotlight with a gathering of francophone beats and rhymes that will definitely rock the house. Kra-z-noize from Shades of Culture is joined by apogee, La Replik, KO3, Complys, KZ-kombination and RDP-izeurs. All of these artists are also available on the Apocalypse 1999 CD, a hip hop compilation available at HMV. You should probably "Manuva" yourself fairly quickly to pick up tickets, as these guys are sorta popular 'round these parts. The tix are $12, and available at Noize Musique. Oh yeah. Correction from my last installment--although we dig him, P-Love is not the '98 Mtl DMC champ. That esteemed title belongs to a young lad called DJ Blast. Sorry man, my bad.
