Angel >> Café Rico, Montreal's socially conscious coffee house Almost all the coffee available in Montreal is picked by migrant labourers, who live and work on mega-plantations under slave-like conditions. Café Rico, by comparison, only serves coffee grown by growers' co-ops. A recent Mirror taste-test showed that, unfortunately, egalitarian coffees don't taste any better than the slave-driven kind. But it's no more expensive--and at least you can get your caffeine fix with a clean conscience. Café Rico is located at 969 Rachel E., just west of Parc Lafontaine.

Insect >> Nefarious thieves who pilfer musical instruments First it was the Crazy Rhythm Daddies, who had their beloved banjo and their pedal steel guitar swiped by some craven roots-rock renegade. Thankfully, they managed to secure a spare pedal steel from Tommy Hunter's band at half price (the banjo has yet to be replaced). Now it's Les Secrétaires Percutantes, that wacky six-pack of liberated chix-with-stix from the steno pool, who've had all their drums stolen. A pox on the burglars and on any pawnbroker who buys them. Les Secrétaires Percutantes will hold a fundraiser on Sunday, February 28, at 8 p.m. at the Lion d'Or (1690 Ontario E.). Wear black to show your solidarity in mourning.
