"...Smiles every time my face is up in the Source." by Scott C First of all I say this: if you haven't been sick yet, don't even try to fight it because the illness is stronger than you think. Although bed-ridden for most of the past week, I was still able to pick up a copy of this month's Source magazine, where a nice three-page spread gives the skinny on what's going on in Montreal hip hop. Written by Eric Arnold, the piece does a pretty good job summing up both the English and French contributions to the culture in the 514. Pictures of R-Kade, Shades of Culture, Obscure Disorder, Dubmatique, and the lovely Simahlak proudly grace the pages of the most bought hip hop mag in the world. How fitting then, that the biggest mugshot in the article belongs to Mtl DMC Champ DJ P-Love, who I caught buying up all copies of the magazine on St-Laurent. Pee (he only lets me call him that) is also the guy responsible for the Montreal chapter of Tableturns, a showcase of local and visiting DJs minus the battle format. "The idea is to create a collective where DJs can come and showcase their skills," Pee tells me, "whatever level that may be, without fear of being completely dissed." Tableturns was originally started in New York, and now has chapters all across the states and Mtl. "There's so many DJs here, so much talent. Nobody else took the steps to start Tableturns here, so I took it upon myself." You can catch P-Love kicking a new routine (dope) at Quartier Latin on Sat. Feb 13. NYC's Turntable Crash Dummies will also be in the house, and the entire night will be hosted by Lo-key and Dave motherf**kin'. The tax is $7 at the door and $5 with a flyer. Don't front. You could say I was surprised to find T.O.'s Choclair and Mtl's own Tactical Crew shooting a television show in the loft right next to mine on Sunday night. To the M@X is a show airing on YTV that shoots right here in Montreal, with this particular episode featuring a profile on A-Trak and a piece on Maestro Fresh Wes. The episode should air some time in April. Choclair informed me that his album, released on Virgin, is due out in June. Check out The Love Moment at Cabaret this Friday night. DJs Ronin, D-Jon, and the AR bring you world rhythms old and new. From Fela Kuti to Talvin Singh, and more didgeridoos, tablas and sitars than you can shake a stick at. $6 bucks in advance, $8 at the door.
