You get the message

>> Luciano is a very... affectionate performer

by SCOTT C

Where would we be if Luciano--"The Messenger of Love"--didn't pass through Montreal just in time for the big "V" day? The reggae superstar oozes the very substance that Valentine's is all about L-O-V-E, as I learned very quickly while talking to him on the phone from Jamaica.

Mirror: Luciano!

Luciano: Yes brudda Scotty!

M: I look here and I see "Luciano, The Messenger of Love." "Luciano, Reggae's Messenger." Just what is this message you're trying to deliver?

L: The message of togetherness, of hope, of enlightenment. 'Cause I see hereby a betterment can only come when we come together, more focused, more centralized and organized. The music is a true blessing that God has given us as the true essence of togetherness. Over the years, I see the music has been taken for granted. People have come an' sing all these things, sing about so many different secular things.

M: Obviously that bothers you...

L: It doesn't really get me upset. I don't see why I should come and sing about "bumba" and "batti-rider," "Benz and Bimma," when at the same time I can talk to the people. 'Cause when I look around I see suffering, I see poverty, I see confusion, so if I can add my own spirit in a positive way to shed a light on the heart of the people, then I believe that I should do so, my brudda.

M: Everybody knows that you disappeared for a while in 1998 before releasing your latest album. Where were you, man?

L: When I see all things happenin'--'nuff work, spendin' lots of time away from the family, I didn't have much time for myself, y'know? My spirit, the inna man, that knowledge of good and evil within me, it cornered me and said, "Bwoy, take a break. Take a little sabbatical." With all the work and rush, things were getting pretty hectic, my brudda, I tell you true. So me a just take a stand, spend some time with my family in the countryside, eat some good country cookin' and smoke some good herb, y'know?

M: Luciano the family man?

L: Really and truly, Scotty, I have four sons from four different mothers, y'know.

M: So you're a true family man! (laughing)

L: Yes I. Me is a true family man in every sense of the word. (laughing)

M: What about Luciano the romantic? I mean, family man or not, the ladies still go mad for your music, no?

L: I would call myself a very affectionate performer...

M: Well, with four sons I would guess so! (laughing)

L: Really and truly, Scotty, I have come to realize, my brudda, that one of the greatest things I have is love. What love has done for me over that last couple of years no amount of money could have ever done. I see where love has brought me, places all over the world, and I am amazed.

M: We can't forget the ladies, though, man. Do a lot of women try to approach wherever you go?

L: (laughing) Ya, man. I tell you (laughing) this is the biggest problem that I must face. (laughing) But you know what? I deal with it properly.

M: What exactly is "properly?"

L: Properly in the sense that you must do everything in moderation. (laughing) I use that as my golden rule.
