Angel >> Prison rioters with the wisdom to be selective about what they trash Over the weekend, 21 Bordeaux prison inmates broke down a few walls and threw some tables and chairs hinder and yon. Yes, yes, prison riots are scary things that should not be condoned. But keep in mind that, only weeks ago, Quebec's ombudsman delivered a scathing report about the state of the province's prisons: poorly managed, overcrowded, drug abuse running rampant. Definitely worth rioting about--and who better to protest in favour of prison reform than the prisoners themselves. And at least they spared the phone, the television, and the board games. Because when they come down off the high from this riot, they're going to need something to do in order to pass the time.
Insect >> The City of Montreal's sidewalk tanks Apparently, about 100 people a year suffer injuries due to either collisions or near-misses with the mini-tanks, called "bombadiers" by their drivers. Is anyone surprised? Who hasn't walked the streets of winter, their ears muffled by their toque, only to have one of those metal beasties sneak up behind them and nearly run them over? The latest news: during last week's mini ice storm, the tanks were once again deployed to clear the city's pedestrian pathways. But the machinery wasn't made to clear sheets of solid ice, let alone ride atop them. The carnage: over 100 cars damaged as a result of slip-sliding armoured cars.
