Girl DJs in Vogue, Miss Cookie remembered by KRISTA This month's issue of American Vogue contains an article on girl DJs, albeit one that is only a half-page long. According to the author of the article, now that fashion has fallen in love with "the image of vinyl-toting kids in vintage sneakers," DJing has become an almost respectable career choice... if you can manage to look good doing it, that is. It's a good thing I know that Carol C wears silver headphones and split-toed ninja fighting boots, and that Rebecca Swift has a funky hairdo and buys her clothes at thrift stores. Unfortunately, the author neglected to tell me where I can go to hear these ladies spin the next time I visit the Big Apple. It's Sona anniversary time again. If memory serves me, last year's bash was pretty out of hand, and I'm pretty sure the Larry Flynts of the Montreal after-hours scene won't disappoint this year either. Friday, February 5 sees L.A.-based DJ/producer Doc Martin and Sweden's Cari Lekebusch in the main room. Lekebusch has produced tracks on more than 20 different labels, which is pretty impressive in itself. However, not only does he make slamming tracks, but the kid can mix. And he's not hard to look at either. With Analog Junkies live, Tiga, Yaz, XL, Ram, Jordan Dare, Devious and Wreck, 20$ at the door. Saturday has L.A.'s DJ Dan and Chicago's DJ Sneak. With Luc Raymond, Laflèche, X-Horde live, Nic B, Ray-Ray, Red Dredd and Eddy Lewis, 35$ at the door. Stereo has a little bash up its sleeve for Friday as well. It's the first of the Safari nights (see flyer with Charlie's Angels-in-the-jungle theme), and it's also the official Bombay Records launch for Miguel Graça's Watchalike EP. The undisputed king of the house beats, Derrick Carter, returns to Montreal to play alongside MG, Nav, Mika and Patrick Dream. Musically, it doesn't get much better than this. Doors at 2 a.m., 20$. On Saturday, February 13, Unity opens the Hot Chocolate Room (formerly the lounge), hosted by Miss Sheena Hershey. Dr Love warms it up with a milky-smooth collection of new and classic vocal house and Étienne from Squeeze (Metropolis) is at the bar. Finally, I digress from all the club-going nonsense to take a moment and mention that a very special and influential member of the Montreal house scene passed away last week. Miss Cookie--who worked with Sterile Cowboys, and was instrumental in KOX events and basically any warehouse party that ever happened back in the day--will be greatly missed. There will surely never be anyone quite like her again. She had more appreciation for music than many a DJ and added flavour to any event. Hands down the fiercest dancer on the floor. We hope that she has found a happier place.
