>> Sabine Karsenti's afterlife

by MATTHEW HAYS

For budding actor Sabine Karsenti, a Montreal upbringing meant a leg up in the film and TV business. "Travelling around Canada, you can really see the cultural difference of being raised in Montreal," she says. "Even in terms of sense of humour and priorities. The west coast scene is definitely more laid back. I feel it's a real privilege to be able to use two languages in my work."

Karsenti has been spending the last few months in Vancouver, where she managed to snag a starring role in the syndicated TV series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven (based on the popular movies, it's seen locally on Showcase and the Space Channel). The scenario follows Karsenti and a love interest around as they travel through the afterlife--and it's not exactly uplifting.

"Unless you knew what we were shooting, you really wouldn't know that we were shooting something dark," Karsenti says of the on-set atmosphere. "The people I'm working with are really fantastic."

Karsenti has studied extensively with the prestigious Stella Adler Academy in both New York and Los Angeles. She's already managed to land roles in numerous feature films--including the award-winning Bonjour Timothy--and over 70 commercials. Dividing her time between Montreal, Vancouver and L.A., Karsenti's big hope is that the boom in productions in Montreal will mean she can actually get some gigs in her home town. "That would make me the happiest girl in the world."
