Montrealers

Montrealer closest to sainthood

5. Brother André

6. Sasha

Honourable mentions: Celine Dion, T'Cha, Mark Recchi, Matt Collyer, Mordecai Richler, Sid Stevens, homeless people, squeegee kids.

Montrealer closest to hell

1. Lucien Bouchard, Pierre Bourque (tie)

5. Raymond Villeneuve

Honourable mentions: Guy Bouthillier, Brian Mulroney, Nathalie Simard, Elizabeth Bromstein, Leonard Cohen, James Di Salvio, OLF employees, Bourque's secretary, MUC police.

Most desirable man

1. David Usher

2. Leslie Roberts

3. Jean Charest

Honourable mentions: Jake Brown, James Di Salvio, Jojo, Mado, Pierre Trudeau, Rufus Wainwright, Serge Ménard, Roy Dupuis, Roch Voisine, William Shatner, busboy at Sofa, Billy Zane, David Snively, waiter at Café Souvenir, Goth boys, Travis Gecko, the brunette on the HMV billboard, John @ DNA, Jordan Swift. >> Montrealers are indeed an eclectic bunch. Just look at our top three in this category--they personify the arts, media and politics. If you roll all three of these fellas into one, you would end up with a Renaissance man to rival Da Vinci for sure! Also of note: Moist's lead singer David Usher leads the pack this year, up from the number two spot in '97.

Most desirable woman

1. Celine Dion

2. Sasha

3. Mitsou

Honourable mentions: Pascale Bussières, Mila Mulroney, David Usher, my wife, my ex-wife, my girlfriend, his girlfriend, staff at Sona, waitress at Monte Cristo. >> The most remarkable thing about Montrealers' choice for most desirable woman--aside from Celine Dion winning!--was that no one received an overwhelming majority, and it's as though every woman in Montreal got at least one vote. Gone are the days of the Mitsou-esque icon, when one single woman managed to dominate the city psyche by singularly personifying the sexiness, steaminess, vibrancy, urbanity, aloofness, fashion-whoriness and lapsed Catholicism that is Montreal. Is it because no turn-of-the-millennium woman can be all those things at once? Actually, it's probably because they all do. In Montreal there's a babe on every streetcorner, and it's schwing time all the time.

Montrealer we'd most like to clone

1. Nick Auf der Maur

2. Pierre Trudeau

3. Leonard Cohen

Honourable mentions: Abeille Gélinas, Annie Pelletier, Howard Galganov, Father Emmett Johns, William Shatner, Sasha, Jean Charest, Shayne Corson, Maurice Richard, Mark Recchi, Mitsou, anyone but Leonard Cohen.

Loudest activist/protester

1. Howard Galganov

2. William Johnson, Raymond Villeneuve,

me (tie)

Honourable mentions: Yves Manseau, Alexandre Popovic, the French community, Lucien Bouchard. >> Disturbing results, these. Howard Galganov beat out each of the contenders by such a huge margin that any pretense of competition was laughable. And here we've been, sending reporters out to write about anti-hunger activists, police-brutality protesters, and defenders of street kids' rights. Point taken: in this city, clearly, language politics rule.

Best female actor

1. Macha Grenon

2. Marina Orsini

3. Mitsou

4. Pascale Bussières

Honourable mentions: Mia Kirshner, Sophie Lorain, Tabitha Kane, Pascale Montpetit, Julie Tamiko Manning, Leni Parker, Élise Guilbault. >> Macha Grenon tops our list again. Mitsou's a bit of a surprise, seeing as she really doesn't do all that much acting; her TV appearance of note last year was a cameo role in Bruce McDonald's pilot Platinum.

1. Roy Dupuis

2. Luc Picard

3. Michel Côté

4. David La Haye

Honourable mentions: Lothaire Bluteau, Jacob Tierney, Alex Martin, Matt MacFadzean, Matt Holland, William Shatner, Donald Sutherland. >> Local heartthrob Roy Dupuis, currently starring in the of-questionable-quality TV series Nikita (shot in Toronto), again tops our list as best male actor. Locals appear to be a bit confused about where some actors come from; some cited Mr. Bean and Jeff Bridges, neither of whom reside in our fair city. William Shatner, everyone's favourite starship captain--if not the world's greatest actor--garnered one vote.

Best theatre play

1. Grease!

Best Latin act

1. Lhasa de Sela

2. Papo Ross & Orquesta Pambiche

3. Metro guys

4. Dubmatique

5. Joé Armando

Lhasa de Sela is quickly becoming a high-profile export, garnering substantial attention out of town. It's nice to see those panflute-tooting technicolour troubadours "the metro guys" get their props, too, though. Special mention goes to multiple vote-winner Tito Puente, which shows how much Montreal knows about its Latin scene. Welcome aboard, Tito!

Best club DJ

1. Mark Anthony

2. Mario Tremblay

3. Tiga

4. Jojo Flores

5. Mateo

Most prominent scenester

1. DJ Quan

2. Jake Brown

3. Plastik Patrick

4. Sasha

5. Ian Hodkinson

According to one voter, "Scenesters need serious ego deflation." Huh. Probably some nobody. Anyway, honourable mentions go out to Jeffrey Frigid, the delightfully zaftig Miss Kim and noted egghead Will Straw. Plus Rob Vézina, Mitsiko Miller, Mireille Silcott's tits, Rochelle Lash, Chico, Carl and Jack. Oh, and that little weasel Pat Wreck from Greenland.
