The Mirror's authoritative guide to New Year's Eve

Compiled by JASON BOGDANERIS

It's that time again. When all the unfulfilled expectations of the last 11 months and 30 days are rolled up into one pressure-filled, overblown social litmus-test of cool called New Year's Eve. The question "What are you doing this year?" seems to reverberate in the halls of your psyche as you recall nightmarish past adolescent evenings spent watching Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians with your parents while older siblings did "the Hustle" till dawn.

But don't worry, this year will be different, thanks to the following handy guide...

(don't forget - you can always use the FIND function of your browser)

Big, huge, sweaty, all-night parties

Whether you're selling tamagochis or starting a metal band, the key factor is volume. The same goes for finding the best party on New Year's Eve. If you plan to celebrate with an intimate little do at a friend's pad, stop reading now and get on over to the liquor commission... They'll be closed before you know it.

On the other hand, if you plan to make this the pivotal party night of the year, you want to be someplace where the sheer number of revellers precludes the possibility of boredom before whatever time you intend to stumble into the harsh dawn light of the new year and promptly pass out in a snowbank.

Bal des Boys 1998, Club Unity, 1400 Montcalm 875-7026, Bad Boy Club Montreal Club Unity pulls an all-nighter for the first time, thanks to a special permit which allows this New Year's Eve Boys Ball to rage 'til 10am. Featuring: DJs Gilles Jr. & Stéphane Grondin, BBCM dancers in a retrospective show reliving the best of Bad Boys '98 parties, disco diva Miss Geraldine Hunt, an enlarged dance floor and special decor. Dress code is black & white. $35 in advance & $45 at the door (if available.) Part of a weekend of Village festivities which continue at Sky and Stereo. Weekend passes $75.

Celebration '99, CEPSUM (Université de Montréal), 2100 Edouard-Montpetit (metro Edouard-Montpetit) 514 Productions are throwing this futuristic bash featuring Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva in the main room and others in the VIP and chill-out areas. Cepsum will be dressed up to look like a starship and partygoers will be transported to the other side of midnight with the help of a wall of TVs, giant tubes hanging from the ceiling and old-fashioned balloons for the traditionalists. The cheaper tickets are sold out, so all that's left are $60 advance, $175 VIP (open bar, no waiting!) or $90 at the door.
