Election Gaffe of the Week

Liberal seeks support of organized-crime demographic

Jean Charest had to defuse a bomb earlier this week when his candidate for Richelieu, Gilles Ferlatte, said that the Hell's Angels in his riding were model citizens.

"The Hell's Angles around here, they're very tranquil folk," said Ferlatte, a retired MUC police investigator, during a press conference in his riding with Charest. "In the Sorel area [where the gang's main fortress is located], they are not the what the people in Montreal say they are."

"There's a difference between what a particular group is like in their home environment and what kind of activities they engage in," interjected Charest, attempting to defuse the issue.

At the end of the press conference, Ferlatte was rushed to the exit by his press attaché.
