Profiling the pet perps Is Fido safe? Will Minou's hide be spared? Is Montreal becoming a hell-hole of satanic pet killings? Since the Mile-End catnappings were first reported in the Mirror last June, the carcasses of mutilated dogs, cats and other animals have been turning up in Montreal parks, begging the question: what's going on? According to Pierre Barnoti, executive director of the SPCA, at least three different groups are behind the killings that have taken place on Mount Royal, in north-end Parc Nature de l'île de la Visitation and in LaSalle. Such a differentiation can be made, said Barnoti, based on the differences in the killings. In LaSalle, eight dogs were found skinned in one incident two months ago. Barnoti claims that this killing does not fit a ritualistic profile and suggested that the animals may have been slain for their fur. The animals found in Parc Nature last week were piglets, baby goats and chickens. All were decapitated, but Barnoti says that because their feet were bound with "professionally" knotted twine, the evidence reveals a more experienced animal handler, and the killing seems more like a religious sacrifice. The dogs and cats found in Mount Royal Park over the last five months were decapitated and skinned. Because the carcasses were found near a fire pit and were not bound like those at Parc Nature, Barnoti believes they were subjects used in satanic rituals. He hinted that those responsible were part of the Goth youth culture: "These people are part of a whole Montreal scene, with their own music and discotheques." However, some see all the killings as a part of the same trend. "All these things are ritualistic," said Jan Murray, a Mile-End resident who lost her cat in May. "Why else would people dump these animals in parks? It's sick. " Barnoti asks that anyone with information about the killings contact the SPCA at #735-2711 ext. 222. --Dominique Ritter
