Roger's dodges and Chinese lessons

by KRISTA

Now, if I had placed bets on how badly the Hang the DJ party would turn out this past weekend, I'd be a wealthy girl right about now. In the interest of non-partisan journalism, I'm going to try not to point fingers at anyone. I'm sure the promoters of the event never anticipated the fiasco that ensued last Saturday (perhaps that's part of the problem right there--lack of foresight). The unfortunate consequence, however, is that once again what was advertised on the flyer and what actually went down were two very different things.

Although the promoters, Profile, have apologized for the total lack of organization and professionalism, saying you're sorry doesn't make people feel any better about the 30 or 40 bucks they spent on a ticket. Especially when most of the DJs didn't even show up (hip hop room) and the guest of honour (Roger Sanchez, star of the Hang the DJ movie) only mixed about a dozen records, if that.

Yesterday (Wednesday, November 25) marked the opening of yet another place to listen to good tunes. The space that was formerly Le Lézard is now Jingxi. In Chinese, Jingxi means loosely "a place where people gather to hang out." Seems pretty fitting. DJs Luv and Nice Fred, Fred Everything, Nic B and Soul Sista, and Robert Ouimet play Wednesday through Saturday respectively. Sundays will be reserved for live bands and bizarre techno experiments. For more info call 990-0994. Jingxi is located at 410 Rachel E., at the corner of St-Denis.

This Friday, November 27, Philadelphia's DJ Dozia plays at Stereo with Patrick Dream. Dozia recently put out a 12" on Ovum (Josh Wink's label) called "Culture" which, although it didn't get much play up here, received lots of positive reviews in the States. This is Dozia's first trip to Canada, and the boy plays some seriously funky tunes, so don't miss it.

Also this Friday, Montreal's own purveyors of psychedelia, Nuclear Ramjet (Nivoc, Aeon and Miracle Flash) celebrate the release of their first full-length CD called Age of Aquarius. Co-hosting the event, taking place at Sona, are the Free Bamboo Butterfly posse. DJ Ram will be behind the wheels of fire in the bar. And be sure to look for the girl who paints messages in Chinese anywhere on your body for free. If you like to trance out, Sona's the place to be.

Next Thursday, December 3, The White Ribbon Campaign hold their first annual dance event, to take place simultaneously in three Canadian cities (Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver). It's called Namaste and takes place here at Metropolis. DJs are Bobby D'Ambrosio from Def Mix NYC, and San Francisco's John Howard. Tix are $20, for a very good cause.
