Angel >> Lawrence MacAulay, Andy Scott and all Solicitors General through the ages MacAulay, Scott's replacement, started his first day on the job with a blooper of his own: he suggested that he would keep secret a report on police conduct during last year's APEC summit, and his staffers later scrambled to correct him. But that's okay, because that's what Solicitors General are for--to trip over their own feet and, eventually, get the boot. It happened to one of Mulroney's Solicitors General, too. They have the worst portfolio in cabinet: in charge of the RCMP, CSIS and prisons, eventually something is bound to go wrong. And while we're on the topic, we'd just like to add that we like the anachronistic sound of the title. We believe "Justice Minister" should be returned to its prior title, "Attorney General." And whatever happened to the "Postmaster General?" Has the nation lost its flare for tradition?
Insect >> Megalomaniac Mayor Pierre Bourque It's only been three weeks since Pierre Bourque defied his legions of critics by being awarded a second term at the helm of our city, and already official opposition has denounced him anew as a power-monger. In an unprecedented political manoeuvre, Bourque has snubbed City Hall's few dissenting voices by refusing to appoint any of them to municipal committees, as well as reducing councillors' right to speak during council meetings. In order to ensure some involvement in city goings-on, opposition councillors will bring the issue before the provincial government in an attempt to amend the city charter and reverse Bourque's exclusionary coup, guaranteeing themselves participatory roles at city hall. The Insect of the Week space welcomes you back, Mister Mayor.
