The out-of-towners

by SCOTT C

Well, it looks like Montreal is going to get a little bit of well-deserved exposure south of the border and beyond. Last week, New York journalist Erik Arnold and photographer John Harris were in town checkin' out the city's hip hop shotcallers and flyspots for an upcoming feature in the Source's In The Hood column.

The two were seen chillin' at Blizzarts on Friday night, where the Brass Knuckles Crew were mixing up their usual bag of tricks. As it also happens, I got a call the next day from a guy named Kemp Powers, who writes for a new hip hop mag called Blaze, owned by Vibe Magazine. Apparently, they also have our fair city slotted for a piece in an upcoming instalment of The World is Yours, their coverage of hip hop culture throughout the world.

He faxed me a questionnaire stating that he could "represent Montreal to the fullest in the pages of Blaze Magazine." If I understand correctly, he also faxed several "key" people in the city who could give him a further idea of what goes on here on the regular. So, if you have some answers to the following questions, fax me at 393-3173 or call 271-7268. Your pick just might get into the pages of Blaze or the Source.

MC This is it! Who's the dopest lyricist holdin' it down in your town?

Next to Blow Who's the next cat from your city who's gonna blow the f**k up?

The Body Rock Breakin' baby! Who are the best b-boys/b-girls and theircrews?

Graf Any hot graf artists you know about?

Slang Is there any local slang term that only y'all use? What is it? What does it mean?

This week, Hundred Acre Wood presents The Next Step, an old school b-boy/b-girl theme party being held at Cabaret on Friday, November 20. Bust out your Nike Cortez and your tightest Jordache jeans 'cause you could win a prize. DJs P-Love, Jay Bee, Agent Cooper and Spazmodik Matrix will be serving up hip hop on six turntables under the divine tutelage of your host the A.R. Tickets are $6, available at the door.

The man who took his spoken word crusade down the 401 to Toronto just keeps coming back. Montreal native Anthony Bansfield is responsible for Word Life, a spoken word/hip hop CD compilation that features artists from Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. A CD release party is scheduled for Saturday, November 28 at Isart and will probably be broadcast live on CKUT 90.3 FM, with DJs from the Ill Groove Garden close by. Anthony is a bold performer and has lots of friends with 'nuff to say, so check it out.

Finally, this week I've been playing phone-tag with John Carluccio, director of the movie Battle Sounds: Hip Hop DJ Documentary. Called "the definitive movie on the art of turntablism," it's slated for a screening here in Montreal in early December, but I'm trying to get my copy now. This movie may very well satisfy the disgruntled Hang The DJ audience who wanted to see more scratching.

Could this start a turf war between the Carluccio and Lavilla families? More later.
