Weed creed They aren't expecting to smoke the opposition, but the marijuana-legalizing party known as Bloc Pot is planning to put cannabis on the provincial agenda. "All you need is a couple of hundred pissed-off potheads to force the government to think things over," said Marc St-Maurice (aka Boris), leader of the BP, who plans to bring out pro-pot voters on Nov. 30. He describes the BP, which is presenting a slate of 23 candidates in ridings across the province, as "one party, one platform." Its function: to decriminalize marijuana. St-Maurice has been busy canvassing door-to-door in his Mercier riding, where he says he has been met with a favourable reception in roughly one quarter of the constituents' homes. Some want to legalize all drugs, some want to tax marijuana but, according to St-Maurice, "they all agree that the marijuana laws are too severe." Posters should start popping up around town, but don't expect the streets to be shrouded by cannabis leaves. The 300 or so BP signs will consist of recycled placards from the municipal election bearing their own posters. What does the existence of the BP do for the average citizen? "This will give the average Joe Schmo the chance to do something significant with their vote." --Dominique Ritter
