Led by a man frowning loudly into his bullhorn microphone, a group of 75 demonstrators marched to Nelson Mandela Park in Côte-des-Neiges last Saturday, part of a nationwide protest against the tightening of eligibility rules for Canada's refugee claimants. The group later burned federal immigration minister Lucienne Robillard in effigy. Similar demonstrations were held simultaneously in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. In the last five years, Canada's immigration and refugee board has refused more than 30,000 refugee claims.
