Now with 22% more! by SCOTT C Some said it would never happen, while others begged out loud with the powers-that-be to be spared from such a horrific outcome. But hey, here I am writing a bi-weekly column that will effectively give me about 22% of the power and influence that Mireille Silcott ever had. I'll be sharing that percentage with Krista and Drop the Needle of course, but I thought I'd just warn you now. For those of you who were wondering, the 1998 Technics World DJ Championship was held at the Palais des Sports in Paris on Oct. 18. Our little man with the plan, DJ A-Trak, was there to defend his '97 world title. As the last to compete out of 27 DJs, A-Trak snagged 3rd place, keeping him situated as one of the top five DJs in the world. The results: 5th--DJ Dexta (Australia), 4th--DJ Akakabe (Japan), 3rd--DJ A-Trak (Canada), 2nd--DJ Crazy B (France) and 1st--DJ Craze (United States). You're still number one with us though, A-Trak, you little turntable nutty-buddy! It looks like we might have ourselves a show, people. The Hang the DJ extravaganza that's happening later on this month has slated Biz Markie, Canibus and most importantly the Pharcyde on the hip hop stage. If you look on the flyer, you'll see that "live" is written in parentheses beside Canibus and the Pharcyde, but not the Biz. This probably means he'll be DJing and engaging in all kinds of absolute foolishness while we wait for the rest of the show to begin. The last thing I heard was that FatLip had left the Pharcyde, and then there were three. So right now I'm praying for some kind of rap-miracle or divine B-boy intervention, hoping that we can enjoy ourselves to the utmost. Seems like more than one of this city's nite life "facilitators" was more than cross with our annual guide to clubbing in Montreal. Stepping away from the listings format, the supplement focused on particular clubs and scenes, with writers taking a more personal angle. The exclusion of any given space was not meant to denote an unfavourable view at all, but it seems that like that's what was understood. So, I'm going to go back over the next few weeks and touch on some of the other places that weren't mentioned. That said, if you're looking for a little bump and grind outside of the downtown core, you might want to check out the Typhoon Lounge in NDG. Sitting right there on Monkland in the midst of all that residential hustle and bustle, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find the lounge free of senior citizens and schoolchildren. Tuesdays are particularly nice, with Soul-O and the Aliens funking up the neighbourhood in their own special way. If you've got something you think I could drop a line about, don't wait until two days before the paper comes out to get me the info. I'm talkin' about hip hop, live shows, art expos and just about anything with flavour, so don't sleep!
