Lingo lessons by KRISTA This portion of Drop the Needle is brought to you by Stereo's Bambi, features lots of flamboyantly queen-like attitude and is sponsored by Prada, because it's expensive, and coke, because it's OK (you figure it out). Bambi gets to be featured in this week's column for no other reason than her ability to entertain. And because she sponsored my inspiration by pointing out how much more interesting the average conversation becomes when you feature a little inventive lingo. I recommend that everyone give it a try. All you need to do is pick out a few key words to use in new ways. For instance, Bambi and friends have become attached to "feature" and "sponsored," and their every sentence now contains at least one of those words. Example: "She was featuring some seriously bad shoes." It's just basic word substitution. Of course, the effectiveness of the whole schtick is subject to the amount of attitude that can be detected in your voice and body language but, with a little practice, it shouldn't be too hard to pull off. At any rate, these days conversational slang is as common as those ridiculous platform running shoe things you see girls wearing. So, if you can't seem to make the above Stereo version work for you, just eavesdrop on hip-looking young adults frequenting cafés and such and you'll be sure to pick up some cool lingo. I can even give you a few choice words and terms to start you off. Things like "chia" (as a prefix or suffix to a word only), "yo, wha's up," "that's fresh, dude," "check out those fly moves," "let's go back to my crib and chill" and "peace" are very acceptable as far as street talk goes. You now have the tools, my friends, the urban jungle awaits you. >>> Alright. Back to the really important stuff: places to go and put your linguistic skills to good use. This Friday, October 30, the magnificent and unparalleled, the alchemist, Chi-town's chosen one, Derrick Carter returns to Montreal to bless the decks at Stereo (yes, I'm a fan). Patrick Dream opens. $17 at the door. Also this Friday, minimal funk mastermind Luke Slater, aka Planetary Assault Systems, plays Sona. On Saturday night there are a myriad of ghoulish and ghastly things to take part in. Heavyweight's having a "Who's the Mack" party at Jello, Sona's doing a Free Bamboo Butterfly-like dress-up thing and Stereo's having a Stereotype Ball--dress up as your favourite stereotype and win a prize (maybe). The night not to miss, however, will be the following Saturday, November 7, at Club Soda. The boys from the Wednesday night Session, Jordan Dare, Adam L and Ronin present Soul in Motion. Live and direct from the Reprazent crew, MC Dynamite & Morgan, alongside V, Full Cycle and Talkin' Loud recording artist DJ Krust, the event will feature some serious future sounds from the planet drum & bass. Tickets are available for $13 in advance at DNA records or $15 at the door. Chia-later! Comments:secondnature98@hotmail.com
