FAXRANT From: Sophia Wolff and Witchdoctor Doc of Miss Wolff's Jiving School.

Although I did not want to lower myself to the level of the person who ranted about me last week, I have decided to say a few choice words. As most people have guessed, one of our jealous competitors is obviously behind that ridiculous rant.

First, if you really are "new to the swing and jive scene," you probably would not have heard about Bar St- Laurent's great but unadvertised wild rock 'n' roll nights (although maybe you would have seen the huge ads in this paper for our Swing Night at Jello Bar). You might know Doc's name, as he is the DJ, but you wouldn't know my name. And even if you had heard my name, it would be Sophia or Miss Wolff--not "Miss Sophia." In fact, someone we used to work for--who tried to pull a fast one on us and has now lost our business--used to call me "Miss Sophia" frequently by mistake.

To put the icing on the cake, you try pathetically to tarnish my reputation by falsely accusing me of "BEATING PEOPLE UP" and try blatantly to slip in some advertising. I suppose asking "where (you) can go dance" was what you considered a subtle opportunity to call up next week and advertise for free.

What I want to say is that when I got to Montreal, over two years ago, and started my 1940s/50s dance school, everyone tried to tell me it would never work, that Montreal was not a dancing town. I was often discouraged even by those who liked the music, who just didn't think it would work. I owe thanks to a lot of people now, but especially Natalie Lavergne, Giselle, Uwe and Rupert Bottenberg, who I am grateful to for believing in me, the dance and the music right from the start and having the insight/foresight to know that other people would love this too.

The person who phoned in this rant is unfortunately part of the (thankfully) few people who are in this "scene" out of GREED for money, fame and a piece of the bandwagon. What they don't get is that people are not IDIOTS. They can feel who is genuinely in love with the music/dance and who is in it for selfish reasons. Don't disrespect the public! Everything you do in life comes back to you--I believe strongly in karma.

Doc and I would like to thank all our students and friends for having fun with us. And to you who phoned in: nice try and thanks for the PUBLICITY. One of our competitors once said to us: "This is just a bit of fun for us, at least we all have day jobs." Well, this is our day job, our life's passion, and we're proud of it. We were here before the swing revival, Montreal, and we'll still be here after it. Keep trying and whipping... I mean dancing.

(Ed's note: Intensive investigation by the Rant Line team has indeed revealed that Miss Wolff and Doc have never BEATEN PEOPLE UP at Bar St-Laurent. Although Miss Wolff can beat up Roger Argent anywhere, any old time. And thanks for dropping off the photos.)

M Hi, this relates to the rant about the swing and jive scene. Well, the first Saturday of every month Jailhouse still has a jive and swing night that actually has a decent DJ who doesn't put annoying effects on his voice making him impossible to understand. Also, Wednesdays they have a soul night at the Petit Campus which is absolutely great. Keep listening to the music, man! [BLEEP!]

M I want to tell this girl who was down with the swing and jive scene that there is this happening thing at the Hatter's every Tuesday night. The swinging's happening, the beer is cool and pretty much anyone's chill. [BLEEP!]

F Place des Arts. Music World. GUY LOMBARDO. The end is coming, kids. I hope you have plenty of CANNED GOODS in the cellar. [BLEEP!]

Next week: Should photos be a
regular feature of the Rant Line?
