Montreal gives birth to a feminist formation

In the fall of 1995, the Federation des femmes du Québec organized the massive Bread and Roses March, when hundreds of women walked from Montreal to Quebec City in a demonstration against poverty and violence. They're now hoping to duplicate that success on a global scale: this weekend, the FFQ will be hosting the first meeting to organize the World March of Women 2000.

"Nearing the next millennium, women still have to push to take their rightful place," says Judy Raby of the Federation's youth group, who's also part of the organizing committee. "People think that women's equality has been reached, but we are far from it."

Raby says the idea of a global women's march has definitely caught on, and the FFQ is playing a leading role. Nearly 1,000 women's groups worldwide have already endorsed the idea, and representatives from about 200 groups will be on hand this weekend to decide upon the March's global demands, common actions and coordinating body.

The inaugural international women's meeting will take place this weekend at the Cégep du Vieux-Montreal (255 Ontario E.). The meeting is part of the Feminist Popular Education Fair at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau (3000 Viau). For more information, call 395-1196 or visit www.ffq.qc.ca.
