Smells like spirituality

by KRISTA

Well, it was quite the weekend here in Montreal. A veritable festival of spiritual enlightenment, you might say, what with all the Free Bamboo Butterflies, Irresistible Forces and Stereos.

So, was your life changed? Have you all found yourselves?

Unfortunately, after all the hype, I didn't get to attend the Stereo opening (serves me right for having to work on a Saturday night). I did, however, check out the Free Bamboo Butterfly festivities at Sona last Friday evening, which was a lot like being in a human petting zoo. To be honest, I'm not quite sure of the message (and I'm of the impression that there is one) behind all the random nudity and what appeared to be sexually fuelled exhibitionism. I find it difficult to believe that we need to take our clothes off and touch each other to properly experience free love and inner peace--but that's just me.

At the very least, it was an entertaining evening (more so than a regular evening at Sona). I got to pet the albino Boa constrictor and I had "peace" and "love" painted on my arm in Chinese characters. I felt a little more free than usual, but I'm not sure that wasn't the many cocktails I ingested. Art duo Organic Fresh Heroes had some of their paintings on display, which I thought were quite good .

As for the Stereo opening, my roommate had this to say: "It was fun. The sound was great, people looked good, it smelled new."

Sounds like a successful night to me...

I also heard the regular complaints: it was too hot, it was too crowded, there were too many people mobbing the door. But what do you expect? It was the first night, it takes time to iron out the glitches.

As for happenings in the upcoming weeks, this weekend is Thanksgiving and you know what that means. Thousands of people from all over swarm to Montreal for the annual Black & Blue events (in other words, sheer madness). Pre-parties run through the weekend and the final "wind down" event takes place on Thanksgiving Monday, October 12. The Black & Blue party takes place on Sunday, October 11 at the Palais des Congrès.

The following Saturday, October 17, West Coast superstar diva DJ Dan brings his crate of funky breaks and secret weapons to Sona. He can scratch a record like A-trak, and he doesn't play hip hop. I suspect there'll be a pretty mean "battle" circle in effect. Beware of flailing limbs and watch out for airborne Adidas; not everyone who says they know how to breakdance is telling the truth (some kids doing it now weren't yet potty-trained the first time it was hip).

Luba lounge has taken on a new night on Sundays called Chin-chilla, "strictly for those who like big affordable beers and easy chilling." That's from the DJs, Dick Knight and Pale Blue, who, in the future, plan to offer seminars on the finer points of lovemaking and how to make a good vegan fondue.
