ill communication

by KRISTA

One of the more rewarding aspects of my job is receiving mail in response to certain issues I address in my column. It makes me happy to know that someone took the time to read what I had written and felt the need to share their opinion with me.

For instance, in last week's column I wrote that two DJs at Luba Lounge (Hornswitch's Dano & Kosa) had been removed from their residency with no advance warning. The owners of the bar were not satisfied with how things were going and decided that they wanted some new talent.

The owners feel that it was unfair of me to comment on the situation without hearing their side of the story and sent me a letter detailing their reasons for firing the two DJs. Namely that the music was "atrocious and abominable," that they "managed to orchestrate a boring night" and that there were "far too many complaints," resulting in a "loss of customers." They added that they tried to reach the DJs by phone but were unable to.

In the interest of good business, I apologize for printing the information without speaking with them personally. And I didn't mean to single out Luba Lounge--such incidents are by no means exclusive to Luba. The real issue that I was addressing was one of respect: if a clubowner wants to fire a DJ, that's their prerogative. But there has got to be a better way of doing of it.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. It's time to gear up for the final few weeks of intense partying before dreary November sets in and we all turn grey from lack of sunshine. This Friday, September 25, Sona presents tech-house superstar and speed demon (as in bpm) Dave Angel alongside the usual Sona gang. The price is 20 bones at the door. You can pick up his new CD, 39 flavours of Tech-Funk, at DNA records.

Worth checking out is Le Script, located at 1134 Mont-Royal E. For now, Friday nights belong to DJ Mateo. For more info call 529-9617.

L.A.'s Don Juan DJ Terence Toy is back in town this Saturday, September 26, playing at Jaï with Fred Everything and myself. We'll be celebrating T's birthday so it's sure to be a hoot. $6 at the door, 11p.m.3a.m. Also this Saturday night, you can sample Millenium's (winners of the most parties in a six month period award) Speed rave. Guest DJs of note on the night are Patrick Pulsinger, DJ Rush and Joe T. Vanelli (one of these things is not like the other... )

Next Friday, October 2, Amon Tobin, Irresistible Force and Jonah Sharp will be appearing at Isart, but if you haven't bought your ticket yet, you're S.O.L. (that's "shit outta luck"). Artists-about-town Organic Fresh Heroes and promoter Michino are bringing the newly transplanted DJ Arkin Allen to Sona next Friday along with interactive massage therapist Noah Kole for an evening called Free Bamboo Butterfly. The concept is a little off the hook, but worth experiencing, I'm sure. All of Friday's regular DJs will be there as well (I bet Tiga hangs out in the massage area all night).

Last but not least, there's the grand opening of Stereo (856 Ste-Catherine E.) on Saturday, October 3. All that and we haven't even talked about Black and Blue yet...
