Lost in the jungle by KRISTA I'm taking my foot out of my mouth only long enough to tell you what's up this week, and then it's going back in. All that stuff I said about brain freeze last week resulted in a lapse of good judgment and I'm feeling the karma this week. I'll learn eventually. The weekend turned out to be a reasonable success at least. Millennium's Arrival 2 event was quite the party in the woods, and they hooked up a pretty fresh location (near Lachute). I have to admit that I was surprised to find any survivors when I arrived to play at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Ravers... they take a licking and keep on ticking. Preparations for the Arrival 3 have already begun... obviously. I've been hearing a lot of whining lately about how the drum & bass DJs in this city spin tired or played-out tunes. I've always thought that people who complain a lot do so because they haven't anything better to do with their time, and so I've come up with some ways for you to A: entertain yourselves and B: educate yourselves. For starters, you could go out and buy some music. The picks of the week are The Ways of the Dragon (Roni Size and Krust) CD on Dope Dragon, as suggested by John at DNA; Fortran's (Ed Rush, Optical & Matrix) "In the Place to Be" 12" on Metro, and the Mickey Finn and Aphrodite remixes of Luniz's "I Got 5 on it" on Urban Takeover (if you can find it). Angel's now has two jungle-oriented nights for your listening pleasure. If you're into the more chilled, techy side of things then you should hit Easy Tuesdays with DJs Adam L and Ronin. If you're into the more ragga or jump up sound then you should check out DJs Gnat, Sase One and guests on Thursdays. Next Wednesday, August 26, one of the U.K.'s original players, Jumping Jack Frost, owner of the infamous V recordings and Reprazent tour DJ, returns to Montreal for a one-night-only stay at the Session for only $9. This man has been around since the conception of the breakbeat era in the U.K. back in '88 and '89, and you would be doing yourselves a great disservice if you didn't give him a listen. I'm betting that it will also be posted on www.sugarrush.com. Finally, the magnificent Grooverider is confirmed for this year's Cream event on Friday, September 5 at Sona. Once again, the man is a legend... don't miss him. You now no longer have reason to whine. >>> Local techno/house label Minotaur recordings is throwing a small bash this Saturday, August 22 at Isart (263 St-Antoine). Minotaur's frontman Mike Fresco, and Paul Sarik are the musical providers. Also on Saturday is Motiv.03 (third in a series) with Nic B, Maus and live acts Mad Max, Couch Potatoes and more. All homegrown, $15 at the door. Montreal's original female DJ, Bettina Costanza is coming to Montreal, and she's booked to play at Jai with Patrick Dream on Friday, August 28. Play safe.
