Bienvenue
This year's queer pride celebrations promise to be the most exciting Montreal has ever seen. Divers/Cité organizers are expecting record numbers of people--both queer and straight--to flow into the streets to celebrate the great things the queer liberation movement has brought us.
In its 14 years on the stands, the Mirror has consistently covered queer issues for our readership; celebrities as varied as Divine, Gus Van Sant, Lea DeLaria and Sandra Bernhard have all graced our cover. The Mirror was the first paper in the city to run a gay column ("Out in the City") and a lesbian column ("Female Persuasions"), as well as launching the first gay and lesbian issues supplement (in 1990). The Mirror also drew national attention for its coverage of the homophobic murders which plagued the city's gay men in the late '80s and early '90s. It would seem natural, then, that the Mirror and its sibling French-language publication, Ici, would be the official media sponsors for Divers/Cité 1998.
This year, we decided to profile 20 queer Montrealers who we feel have made a beneficial difference in the lives of all of the city's queer citizens. As well, we've compiled a list of 10 queers who've made a difference on a national level. McGill professor Olivia Jensen and our theatre critic Amy Barratt also chime in with features on true diversity at Divers/Cité and lesbian motherhood, respectively.
On this occasion the Mirror would like to congratulate all those people who have made the Divers/Cité week of celebration possible. Endless hours of largely unpaid work have gone into the parade and all the other festivities that happen during one of coolest, most exhilarating weeks of the year. As well, we'd like to welcome out-of-towners who've decided to venture to Montreal to join in on the fun. We hope you enjoy getting to know the city and its intriguing queer inhabitants. Here are 20 of our finest... Have a fantastic week--and look for the Unity/Mirror/Ici float in the parade.
