Cops catnapping in kitty-killer case

The man police say is behind the cat disappearances in Mile-End is not the man many residents suspect of the crime. At least, they don't believe he is the sole perpetrator.

Last week, police arrested a man in his 20s who admitted to killing three cats. But his confession still leaves more than 20 neighbourhood cats unaccounted for.

This week, the Mile-End Animal Advocacy Group organized a petition calling for police to "get serious about the dead and missing cats," garnering 600 signatures. It demanded that all those responsible be found, charged and submitted to psychiatric evalutions.

Mile-End resident Jan Murray says the police haven't been treating the case with the seriousness it deserves. Murray described a meeting she attended last week with Mile-End councillor Helen Fotopoulos, SPCA executive director Pierre Barnoti and Commander Robert Sauvé of the MUC police. "Sauvé made a few weird comments during the meeting. At one point he said he himself has felt like putting poison in some meat and sticking it out for the cats who get into his garbage."

Murray is still fuming about police officers who told her the dead cat dossier would end up in "File 13"--police lingo for nowheresville.

Pierre Verge of MUC police communications says the department had shown it was taking the case seriously by arresting a man. He added that they would be ready to open the inquiry again if new evidence was found. --Jacquie Charlton
