Black Flag goes techno by KRISTA First off, I'll dispense with all the upcoming-events type stuff. Starting at the beginning of the week, Easy Tuesdays continue at Angels with drum & bass DJs Adam L and Ronin. Luba Lounge has a new night starting this Wednesday called Horn Switch. DJs Dano and Kosa play an assortment of techno-oriented treats ranging from the familiar to the undiscernible. Could be interesting. DJ Ram has taken over Thursdays at Jaï, spinning everything from Bob Marley to Acidtrax. This Friday marks the return of Fred Everything to the Sona bar, and Fatboy Slim plays the Sona bar on Saturday. (Why the bar? This boy's main room material!) Also this Saturday, for all the Maritimers out there (I know this city is swarming with Haligonian transplants), DJs Murray Trider and Michel Deveau guest at Jaï. This weekend also marks the summer's first (and possibly only) crazy outdoor rave-type thing called Evolution Radar One (what?), featuring probably way too many DJs including Laflèche, XL and Nic B. On August 8, NYC's techno master Frankie Bones will be in town for Dream, and The Arrival 2 hits Montreal on August 15 (the day after Andy Weatherall and Herbert), boasting four rooms and guests like Colin Favor and his wife Brenda Russell (how romantic), Mike Dearborn, Tim Taylor, Dubtribe live, the Stickmen and Aphrodite along with many local DJs (obviously). Can you say "sensory overload?" Now that we've gotten all of that out of the way, we can move on to the informative portion of our show. I've taken the liberty of compiling a little list of the hot new tunes all you music lovers out there should take a listen to: Superstar DJ Chris Pronovost's (of Inbeat records) top three picks of the past week are 4Hero's "Starchaser" EP (MAW mixes) on Talkin' Loud, Joe Claussell's "Back to the Loft" on Spiritualife and Bugz in the Attic's "Spiritual Vibe" on People. Jordan Dare's drum & bass selections for the week are Ed Rush and Optical's "Satellites" on Virus and Matrix's "Makai Remixes" on Precision. Dare and partner Dylan J. Stress have just released their first 12" under the pseudonym Suspects, entitled "Central Station" on their own 440 Records. Now available in stores everywhere. If you're into Mike Inc., he's got a new label called Propacid. The first release contains a track done in semi-old-school rave style with a sample from '80s pseudo-pop band Prefab Sprout. I'm calling the new genre Chic Kitsch. Detroit's Stacey Pullen has a new project he's calling Black Flag (no Henry Rollins though) and the first release is called "Sweat." Good tech-house done with Detroit know-how. In honour of big-beat sensation Fatboy Slim, Nice Musique's Fred (aka Buster) offers a big beat suggestion in the Freestylers's "Roughneck" on Freskanova. Autechre's new album is out now on Warp and it's called simply LP5. Check out the flyer for the upcoming event--it's quite lovely--or call Harmony info at 897-7900. Happy shopping!
