Angel >> Cycling activist group Right to Move In a world where more and more cars are creating more and more smog, the people at Right to Move have taken it upon themselves to seat as many Montrealers as possible atop a bike. Beginning today (Thursday, July 16), they will hold the first of six bicycle workshops from 7 to 9 pm at Concordia (meet at 2130 Mackay). And on July 25 at L'X (182 Ste-Catherine E.) beginning at noon, they will hold their annual bike-repair charity event: volunteer mechanics will tune up your two-wheeler for a mere donation, and if you have an unwanted bike, they will take it off your hands, fix it up, and give it to a kid in a low-income neighbourhood. Info: 848-7585.
Insect >> The Order of Canada We're not against the Order of Canada per se; it's important to offer some kind of recognition to those who have done great things for this country. The question is: what great thing did Brian Mulroney, the Order's most recent laureate, do for Canada? He gave us the goods and services tax, the most despised tax in the land. He tried to bring the country together, and look what we ended up with: the Reform Party and the Bloc Québécois. It's become standard, unwritten protocol that anyone who serves as Prime Minister gets the Order of Canada--no matter how poorly they governed. Time to do away with the unwritten rule: the nation must preserve its right to say to its political leaders: "You sucked."
