Size does matter

There is something to be said of the theory that less is more, especially these days when everything seems to be so ridiculously over the top.

I'm not going to point any fingers here, but what's the "big" deal? What has happened to the intimate gathering? Why does every "rave" these days have to have 15 guest DJs and 15 local DJs on the bill? "Thirty DJs in 20 hours with 100,000 watts of sound!"

Huh? I can appreciate the idea of wanting to give everyone a chance and all that, but all at once? It just doesn't work, and I'm going to share with you my theory about why: chaos.

No one can figure out who's playing in which room at what time, let alone where the bathrooms and the water are. And then on top of that, there's the debauchery quotient (you know what I'm getting at). Nine times out of 10 there is some sort of police/fire marshal/room capacity problem. And then there's also the whole money issue, and my advice to promoters on that little problem is if you love something, let it go. If it loves you, it'll find you.

If promoters really want to go big, they should be thinking about a three-day festival in a field somewhere far from civilization, where everyone brings a tent and signs a waiver form saying that they promise not to sue the organizers if anything freaky happens to them.

Then all 30 DJs get at least two hours a piece to do their thing, and the likelihood of noise complaints is minimal at best. Of course, this is all just theory, and I'm certainly not making any personal attack on anyone. I'm just saying that I've noticed a "growing" trend.

I'll cease with the editorial and get back to the business at hand. Canada Day has just passed and Ottawa had its usual patriotic fiesta going on, but the fun continues here in Montreal all weekend long. Forget sleeping. Two legendary DJs from Los Angeles, Marques Wyatt and Terence Toy, are in town. Terence Toy plays Thursday night at DiSalvio's with Jojo Flores, and then celebrates Independence Day on Saturday night at Jai Bar. Veteran house DJ Marques Wyatt, who incidentally was voted best DJ of this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami, plays Friday at Jai Bar with resident Patrick Dream. Also on Friday, techno god Cari Lekebush, owner of Sweden's Hybrid Records, plays at Sona with Tiga, XL and Yaz. If you missed Cari when he played at Area/Box Office a while back (which is likely since I was there and the place was empty), here's your chance to make up for it.

If you're still awake by the time Sunday night rolls around and interested in listening to an eclectic assortment of beats, check out Gnat down at the Quartier Latin pub on Ontario just west of St-Denis. It's quite a lovely little place and they serve good beer.
