A little loopy by KRISTA The most interesting part about all this heavy weather is that it makes people a little loopy. Planets shift and the earth turns toward the sun and the combination of El Niño and the summer solstice has the potential to change people rather drastically. This particular summer solstice certainly marks at least one mentionable change to our little dance community, as drum & bass boys Double A and Twist bid their final adieu this coming weekend. They're heading for the big bad U.S. of A because they think it's cooler or something. Oh well... out with the old, in with the new. The Session will live on with regular residents Jordan Dare and Ronin, and some new talent, Wednesdays at Jai Bar. On the "new" front, High Bar which, ironically, rhymes with Jai Bar, had its grand opening one week ago. Unfortunately, on that particular evening I didn't last longer than 20 minutes once I had made it past the fashion police because it was far too sweaty and getting a drink seemed like it might take until 1999. Still, despite my so-so first time, I'm going to give Yoda's boys credit for nice use of space (regardless of what some of my journalistic peers think). Maybe they were going for that sedately decadent "I feel like eating sushi and spilling expensive cocktails on friends as I dance about" look. At any rate, Patrick Dream is the guest DJ at High tonight (Thursday). More new club news: reliable sources have almost confirmed the opening date of new afterhours Stereo for the end of July, but those involved haven't been very forthcoming. Why are people so cryptic? Fred Everything will be on hiatus from his residencies at Sona and Jai as he is on a European tour, and Ottawa's Trevor Walker will play at Sona in his place at least once. Expect some guests from Philly and L.A. to join me at Jai on Saturdays. Warp Records, described in this month's issue of the Face as being "frequently innovative, occasionally unlistenable" and "mostly undanceable" is celebrating its 100th release at the end of June with a CD compilation featuring tracks from each of its 13 artists. Regardless of the above description, Warp is inarguably responsible for several groundbreaking and unforgettable tunes. Montreal will be given an opportunity to celebrate release #100 on Friday, July 31, when infamous Warp recording artists Autechre visit us for the first time in about four years, with DJ Chantal. Shortly after that on August 14, Andy Weatherall, aka Sabres of Paradise, aka the most unattractive man in techno, comes to town along with Matthew Herbert of Phono Records fame, doing a live show. Expect a noisy, if minimalist, extravaganza. One final item that deserves a mention: Guidance Records has just released a CD in celebration of the World Cup of soccer called Copa Mondial Muzique. Track number one is called "Latin Soul" and it's by Turnstyle Orchestra, who are in fact Alain Vinet and Mark Anthony, with some input from Chris Pronovost. Available at fine dance music shops everywhere.
