Angel >> Ladies (and gentlemen) of the night Just because you are part of the world's oldest profession doesn't mean you get any breaks. La Coalition des travailleuses et travailleurs du sexe is an umbrella group which lobbies for the rights of sex trade workers and the ultimate decriminalization of prostitution. Next Thursday (June 4), the group holds a benefit event, "The Red Light Night." The fun begins at 9 p.m. at Le Cirque, 141 Mont-Royal E. Fantasy costumes welcome.

Insect >> The "management scientists" who run the agribusiness industry Two disturbing reports this week heralded the return of mad cow disease: first, the revelation that over 40 per cent of all chicken sold in Quebec stores is contaminated with salmonella; second, the discovery of dioxins in the beef and veal of France, Germany and the Netherlands. This is what happens when agriculture is run by people with MBAs. In the drive for efficiency, they raise chickens in cages stacked atop one another, and they don't scoop the chicken poop. They think nothing of locating cattle farms next to industrial waste-disposal sites, presumably because the real estate is cheaper. Doesn't anyone understand animal husbandry anymore? It's the best reason of all to go vegetarian: eating meat doesn't just kill animals, it may kill you.
