BOM II by MIREILLE SILCOTT Two weeks ago, 3am ran a questionnaire called "The Best of Montreal, Take Two," a kind of second opinion after the Mirror's April 30 Best of Montreal issue. Thanks to the 176 readers who faxed, e-mailed, and even dropped off their ballots. Thanks to the sad DJ who e-mailed nine times with the same ballot from the same address. Thanks to the person who put "that bitch Silcott" down in every category. Thanks to the person who put "Joe from Sona" down for "Best Drag Queen"; I'm sure he'll be glad to hear it. Here are the results. 176 ballot-fillers may not make for a definitive "best," but they sure point things somewhere. Best house DJ: Laflèche. Runner-up: XL. Runner, runner-up: Mark Anthony. The seemingly impermeable house old school has been pierced. Laflèche wins 4-1. Best hard/trance/techno DJ: Yaz. Runner-up: Tiga. Runner, runner-up: Sativa. This was a lightly filled out category, and the answers were extremely diverse. Sativa got into the running with only six votes. Best drum & bass DJ: Double A. Runner-up: Jordan Dare. Double A is in like slim with a whopping 68 per cent of votes. Jordan Dare did admirably with 21 per cent. A very far third is David Florida. Best downtempo/ambient DJ: Gnat. Runner-up: Gordon Field/Ram. Best scratch/technical DJ: A-Trak. Runner-up: Kid Koala. Runner, runner-up: DJ Choice. Having the world DMC Champion living here made things tough for others, but A-Trak (58 per cent) did not get top spot by a landslide, all things considered. Koala was a close second (36 per cent). Best out-of-town guest: Derrick May. Runner-up: Danny Tenaglia. Runner, runner-up: Derrick Carter. Honourable mentions: Mark Farina, LTJ Bukem and "fat New York DJs." Worst out-of-town guest: Junior Vasquez. Runner-up: Daft Punk. Daft Punk had it all sealed up, until Junior played a CD at Swirl 4 two weekends ago. Honourable mention: Keoki, Danny Tenaglia. Best mixed tape: The winner in this bit is "my own," or "mine" or "my boyfriend's," etc. Others just put down DJ names: popular were Mateo, Peter Crno, XL, Patrick Dream and Laflèche. Best club: Sona. runner-up: Unity. Runner, runner-up: Area/Pop. All you people who put in "Business," or "Crisco," should, er, get a life. Best party/rave: Black & Blue. Runner-up: The Arrival. Runner, runner-up: "Anything not at Sona," "not Sona," "nothing at Sona." Most overpriced event: Push '98. Runner-up: Swirl 4. Runner, runner-up: Cream. Push '98 was seemingly one despised party. Many who pencilled in Push included notes ("the model of what not to be," "Shock Productions= the devil") near the entry. Best promoter: 514. Runner-up: BBCM. Most valuable scenester: Again a tough category to read, full of entries like "me," girlfriends and boyfriends. Also popular were the people at Ninja, Tony Desypris, Chris P. and Philgood. Best dancer: House of Pride. Runner-up: Crazy Eddy. Vogue beats rogue. Best dresser: Genevieve (bartender at Sona). Honourable mentions: "not strippers," Twist, Smart Bar Justin (polka-dot massive!), Anik. Best drag queen: Plastik Patrik. Runner-up: Jaclyne Jet. Runner, runner-up: Mado. Honourable mention: Joe from Sona. Best drug: Weed. Runner-up: Ecstasy. Honourable mentions: Sugar, caffeine, "GHB and vomit," "Reactine," "cocaine off a chick's ass," and "love." Aww.
