Various Bulworth Movie Soundtrack (Universal)

Warren Beatty's new movie Bulworth magically plops big name artists like Dr. Dre, KRS-One, Wu-Tang, the Fugees and Public Enemy into a big collaborative pot. The recipe is good, but the music sounds like it was written for a movie; go figure. Applause goes to Organized Noize and Black Eyed Peas for the infectious "Joints 'n' Jams." Not a bad compilation at all and Beatty, who directed, wrote, produced and starred in the film, may secretly be a rapper himself. 6/10 (Scott C.)

Selena Anthology (EMI)

This three-CD retrospective of the slain Tejano singer's music tries to capture the scope of her sound via her different musical styles. Disc 1 features some of Selena's pop/English hits, though the biggest in the genre, "I Could Fall in Love Again," is notable in its absence. Disc 2 explores her mariachi style, disc 3 is devoted to the Cumbia sound. It's clear that Selena's strength lay in her Tejano roots: her pop hits are weak bordering on tacky, while her mariachi and cumbia hits sound polished and full in comparison. 7/10 (Gerard Dee)

Klute Total Self (Certificate 18/Nice)

In this incarnation, Tom Withers is banging out mechanical beats as drum & bass artist Klute. The sturdy, rolling beats that typify this genre are plentiful and sufficient to keep the body moving, demonstrating his ability to construct deep space atmospherics and consuming sub bass. Overall, however, the five tracks on this EP explore no new mental or sonic territories. No fear or anxiety need be raised by the empty threats of this "Silent Weapon." 7/10 (Spunky Balboa)

Susannah McCorckle Someone to Watch Over Me (Concord/St. Clair)

This is the first of what will be many albums to be released in this, Gershwin's centennial year. It's an excellent collection of songs done by a superb vocalist and backed by a small ensemble, put together by pianist Allen Farnham. There's plenty of room for solos by first-class musicians like guitarist Howard Alden and saxmen Chris Potter and Jerry Dodgion. 8.5/10 (Len Dobbin)
