Groove defends!

by MIREILLE SILCOTT

Well, everyone's underwear is in a knot over this sooooo... in the last instalment of 3 am, I interviewed Groove Society's upstairs lounge DJ Donald D., who said that urban DJs are never paid nearly as much as house DJs at the club, and he felt this was a racial issue. Donald was fired from Groove the day before said column went to press. Éric, the owner of Groove Society has explained his side of the matter to me, and for the sake of retaining all my existing limbs, I now forward them to you. And leave you to draw your own conclusions.

"It's true, Donald packed the upstairs, but Donald was fired because he was asking for more money all the time," says Éric. "He started at $125 and soon wanted $250, and I was just waiting for the $300 to come. Which the club cannot afford. The only DJ we use who was paid more than Donald was Chris Farley. But Chris Farley has been around for so long--he has [seniority]. Donald was paid $225 when he left. It was pretty fair, I think. Anyway, Donald always brought bad boys in the club--three times we had to call the police on his friends. Not to mention the rejected $470 Visa bill, here in front of me, from a reprinted credit card belonging to someone who was recently buying Donald drinks all night. We are not racist, just because we don't want 500 black people in the club. We just run a club, and we are doing better than ever. Better than last year! We just don't run an [exclusively] black club."

OK, enough difficult political stuff. It's so tiresome, especially when I can be concentrating on the terribly exciting development that, yes readers, after three years of 3 am titillating you with Goldie-maybes, the Gods have deemed that the Metalhead with the sneaker line is finally coming to town (and this on the same week that the Prodigy have been announced for June 23!). Goldie touches down this Saturday. Sona. Midnight. Twenty bucks. 723-CREW for info. Let's hope he doesn't sing. And let's seriously hope he doesn't suck as badly as the ick-scape Disc 2 of Saturnz Return.

Oh, also in need of address is the pointless catfight which has been imposed on little ol' nicey-nicey me by some columnist who writes for some other paper that I should read, but rarely do. Since she has been so kind as to include me in her column, I can only do the same. Etiquette insists. Here's to unity and all that. So here's a photo I found of "Miss De Meaner" from the cover of a local 1991 indie rock record. I wonder if this is what she means by "old school."
